Chapter Twenty
Lorcan watched Fiona greet Rohese and Tamira, hating Jaycee for having this much control over everything. Heâd insist Fiona accompany them tonight, then go on to Calâs time period. Once Jayceeâs baby was bornâwell then theyâd make some decisions about their future.
The gentle Fae woman hugged Fiona, then Rohese, who was beaming. Lorcan was happy for themâand a little envious.
Heâd breathe easier when Fiona was safely in elven lands, even though heâd miss her like mad. It was trueâLAMB didnât have jurisdiction there. They wouldnât start a conflict with either elves or Fae.
Wishing he could be almost anywhere else, Lorcan returned to Daltonâs office. Jaycee was still there but James Kavanaugh, the arse, was goneâthank Godâas were Michael and Minerva.
Then the back entrance to the office opened and a woman about Daltonâs age joined them. Dressed to the nines, with silver-streaked reddish-blond hair, she looked enough like Jaycee for Lorcan to know this was Janet Clare, her ancestor whoâd begun LAMB with Dalton during another era.
She eyed Lorcan closely and extended her hand. âIâm Janet Grady,â she said, in a Southern accent. âYou may know me as Janet Clare.â Lorcan wasnât keen on shaking it, for she emitted an off-putting vibe. When he did, he found it oddly cold. Dead cold. Likeâ¦a vampire?
No. Surely she was just suffering from poor circulation. She and Dalton were contemporaries and, while no one knew his age exactly, it was measured in centuries. Lorcan didnât know why neither aged. Janet Clare was serpentine. They could live long lives, but not centuries. Daltonâs only other supernatural ability was seeing spirits. Why the partial immortality? Could he be a demigod?
Gossip said LAMB was into cryogenics, but if LAMB were guilty of all they were rumored to do, Lorcan was pretty damn sure he wouldnât want to know. Or stay in their employ.
âIâve heard much about you, Mr. Wright,â Janet Clare said. âMay I call you Lorcan?â
âYou can call me anything you like, just donât call me late to dinner.â He aimed a tight smile at Jaycee. âAnd so long as you donât try to govern every aspect of my life like your⦠What is she, great-great-great-granddaughter a few times removed?â
Janet Clare narrowed her wrinkled eyes to slits. âSit down, Mr. Wright.â
She was so off-putting he was relieved when she chose the chair next to Jaycee, then stroked the younger womanâs belly.
Her thick makeup didnât conceal the scales near her eyebrows and a few peeked out from beneath the fashionable scarf on her neck. She was serpentine, too, and more powerful than Jaycee, in both position and supernatural ability. Reptilians had once tried to overtake the human world and some believed they were still scheming to do so. Janet Clare would be a formidable foe.
âI do hope you are this childâs father, Mr. Wright. Since apparently you will sire no others.â
Jesus, she knew about the vasectomy? Kumar wouldnât have told her, but it would be on his LAMB medical records.
âA grandchild of the late great Dark Lord Odhran would be magnificent,â Janet Clare said.
